چکیده

.. .......-.. Tm.trAbstract: Oviposition sites and the number of larval instars of two mountain blackfly species, Simulium 1-aponicum Matsumura and S. rufibasis Brunetti, were investigated. Zrhe eggs of both species, which were indistinguishable from each other by egg size, coexisted on bryophytes growing on a water-splashed boulder. They were laid individually without making egg masses, and mest of them were found lower than 5 cm above water level. Two eggs of S. jaPonicum were also found on a partially submerged fal]en leaf. Nine ]arval instars were identified in both species based on the measurements of head capsules of laboratory-reared individuals. The growth rates calculated from the size of head capsules between successive two instars were alrnost constant, i.e., a mean of 1.27± O.082 (S.D.) and 1.25± O.045 for S. japonicum and S. rufibasis, respectively. The oviposition habit of these species was discussed in relation to the habitat conditions.

Morphometric comparison of Simulium perflavum larvae (Diptera: Simuliidae) in relation to season and gender in Central Amazônia, Brazil.

Number of larval instars, age structure and environmental effects on these parameters represent basic information in the study of insect population biology. When species have economic importance, this information is essential in order to choose the best period to apply different control methods and to determine the stages of the life cycle of the insect that are most susceptible to each treatme...

Larval biometry of Simulium rubrithorax (Diptera: Simuliidae) and size comparison between populations in the states of Minas Gerais and Roraima, Brazil.

The number of larval instars of Simulium (Hemicnetha) rubrithorax Lutz (Diptera: Nematocera) was determined using the lateral length of the head capsule. In this study 1,035 larvae, of different sizes, were measured (639 from the state of Roraima and 396 from the state of Minas Gerais). A frequency distribution analysis was carried out on the measurements of the lateral length of the head capsu...

Larval ontogeny and morphological variations of Psaroniocompsa incrustata (Lutz) (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil.

Psaroniocompsa incrustata (Lutz) is an antropophilic species widely distributed in Central and South America. It is the vector of Onchocerca volvulus in a Brazilian focus and has been considered a plague in several areas of this country. The objective of this study was to determine the number of larval instars and to describe the morphological variations and teratologies of a population of P. i...

Instar Susceptibility of Simulium vittatum (Diptera: Simuliidae) to the Entomogenous Nematode Neoaplectana carpocapsae.

Laboratory bioassays showed that the susceptibility of Simulium vittatum to Neoaplectana carpocapsae increased with successive larval instars. First, second, and third instar larvae were resistant to infection, while seventh instars were highly susceptible. Significant differences in intra-instar susceptibility were also evident, as mortality ranged from 58% for the smallest seventh instar larv...

An Adaptive Kernel Smoothing Method for Classifying Austrosimulium tillyardianum (Diptera: Simuliidae) Larval Instars

In insects, the frequency distribution of the measurements of sclerotized body parts is generally used to classify larval instars and is characterized by a multimodal overlap between instar stages. Nonparametric methods with fixed bandwidths, such as histograms, have significant limitations when used to fit this type of distribution, making it difficult to identify divisions between instars. Fi...
